About the Department of Labor

Established in 1913, The Department of Labor (DOL) fosters and promotes the welfare of job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the U.S. by improving their working conditions, advancing their opportunities for profitable employment, protecting their retirement and health care benefits, helping employers find workers, strengthening collective bargaining, and tracking changes in employment, prices and other national economic measures.

In carrying out its mission, DOL administers a number of Federal labor laws to guarantee workers’ rights to fair, safe, and healthy working conditions, including minimum hourly wage and overtime pay, freedom from employment discrimination, unemployment insurance, and other income support. DOL administers and enforces more than 180 federal laws. The mandates, and the regulations that implement them, cover many workplace activities for approximately 10 million employers and 125 million workers.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., DOL accomplishes its mission through component agencies and offices that administer various statutes and programs. The Department operates via regional offices and smaller field, district and area offices, as well as through grantees and contractors. Read more at http://www.dol.gov.
